Edward Leon Nims was born in Sumas, Washington on March 10, 1908, in the family house four miles east of Sumas and attended grade and high school at Sumas. One of his first jobs was as night engineer for the shingle mill in Sumas. About 1928 he was assigned as custodian for the newly built Sumas-Nooksack high school, a job he was to hold for much of his life.

Edward married three times. He married Edna Dackstrader on February 21, 1929.

He married Katherine Straka July 11, 1933. Katherine was born July 11, 1913 in Maple Falls, Washington. Ed and Kate leased a service station/store near the school where they lived and operated the store for several years. Later, they purchased a small farm adjacent to the Canadian border about two miles east of Sumas.

Flying became a hobby for Ed so he built a landing strip on the farm and purchased a light aircraft.

Edward and Kate were divorced, and Kate continued to live on the farm and married Robert L. Dean on August 7, 1958. Later, Kate and Robert moved to Dunnegan, Missouri and lived out their retired life. Katherine died April 7, 1991 Dunnegan, MO, at age 77.

In 1941 Edward married Lois Ann Tollum and moved to Deming where he operated a log loading facility. Lois was born January 31, 1921, and died June 9, 1957 at age 38. Ed remarried and was living in a house in Deming at the time of his death on February 19, 1964 at age 55.
