James and Elizabeth Hogg

Much of the information contained herein is extracted from the HOGG GENEALOGY written in the 1950's by Calvin Hogg, great grandson of Samuel, and others, and compiled by: Andrew L. Moore. It contains much more history and many more stories than I have used herein, and is well worth reading.

James Hogg, son of Samuel and Jean Hogg, was born February 3,1808, in Juniata County, PA. In 1814, after the death of his wife, James' father decided to move to westen PA and bought 200 acres of land, with a log house and barn, for $400 in Butler County. The family moved into the house and James sister, Mary, was the housekeeper. (This land is located on Route 108, 2.5 miles northeast of Slippery Rock.)

Elizabeth Watt, daughter of Hugh and Elizabeth (White) Watt, was born around 1820, the 5th child born into a large family.

James and Elizabeth married around 1840. James was a farmer. He started to build a new house, across the road from the log house, but before it was finished, Elizabeth died. He later completed the house, but never lived in it. (The house was still standing in 1968, and was the home of Ted Hogg, great grandson of James.) After Elizabeth died, James and his sons lived with James' sister, Mary. James became stricken with palsy, now called a stroke. He had been hurt by a team of colts while going down a hill toward Bethel Church in a wood sled, the tongue came loose from the sled and the team ran off. James used a cane after this. The last 18 months of his life he was bedfast. James son Harvey had gone to the Civil War and his son John took care of his father and his Aunt Mary. James apparently died before the end of the war. The farm was divided between the two living sons.

James and Elizabeth had the following children:

Calvin HoggBorn in 1841 and died while a child, in 1845.
James Harvey HoggHarv was born around 1843 and served in the Civil War, but saw no action. He was discharged in Harrisburg on June 1, 1863. Harv married Jane Billingsley and they had one child, Emma Hogg.
John Alexander HoggBorn January 11, 1845. John married Elizabeth Thompson Irwin and they had 9 children: James, Martha, Mary, Evalyn, Willis, John, Calvin, Arthur, and Edna.

Elizabeth died young, circa 1851. The year of James death is not certain, but it is said he died before the end of the Civil War, which ended in April 1865.
